Moisture Series: Shampoo
Have you noticed that with some shampoos, when you wash your hair, it feels squeaky clean but soon your hair dries out and your scalp begins to flake? You want to get rid of the flakes, so you shampoo your hair and soon encounter the same problem. It’s a vicious circle of a clean yet dry scalp! This is because some of the shampoos out there have chemicals such as sulphates that leave the hair stripped to the point of breakage!
WHAT ARE SULPHATES?
Sulphates are basically cleaning detergents made to strip away grease and dirt. That means they also have the ability to strip essential oils from our hair. This is why our hair looks and feels dry after using a shampoo that contains sulphates. The effects may not be evident or obvious in the beginning, but of course the longer you use the shampoo, the more damaging the effects.
WHAT ARE PARABENS?
Parabens are chemicals that are used as preservatives. They assist other chemicals in merging or mixing well together. So in terms of shampoos, parabens allow them to last longer on the store shelves and helps the “ingredients” mix well together. Parabens are known to cause skin irritations for people with sensitive skin, which can result in rashes or hair loss in the case of shampoos.
TIPS & TRICKSWhen shopping for shampoo, you want to look for those that don’t contain any sulphates or parabens due to their drying effects. These ingredients can be especially damaging to ethnic hair as our strands require a lot of moisture to keep the hair nourished.
Fortunately for us, the hair-care market is growing and, it’s not very difficult to find sulphate-free and paraben-free shampoos. We are able to clean our hair without the threat of drying chemicals that can do more harm than good.
